The George “Trey” Pharis Fellowship Program is a full-time, 10-week research experience for up to 20 undergraduate students offered through the Data Analytics in Student Hands (DASH) program at the UH Honors College.

Support from the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Science Institute (HPE Data Science Institute) and Humana Integrated Health System Sciences Institute will provide a $4,000 stipend to each Pharis Fellow and facilitate their work on projects using data science to understand topics in health and education.

Open to students in all University of Houston (UH) colleges, Pharis Fellows will work in small teams and under the guidance of faculty mentors to conduct research focused on improving the understanding of social determinants of health within Houston communities. “The key feature of our work with the Pharis Fellowship is our ability to connect undergraduate research directly to the communities we serve,” said Dan Price, clinical associate professor at the UH Honors college and co-director of the DASH program.

“The Pharis Fellowship is a tremendous opportunity for UH students across a wide range of disciplines to engage in collaborative research using health and education data to address real-world problems,” said Andrew Kapral, director of engaged data science at the HPE Data Science Institute. “We are pleased to be partnering with the Honors College and Humana Institute, and are excited for the summer projects.”

George “Trey” Pharis (’11) was a vibrant Honors College information technology staff member who helped to initiate the first DASH program in the College. Pharis had a special interest in graph theory and was a poet, musician and social justice worker. He passed in 2017. In his memory, the application committee seeks to select fellows who have an open worldview, a passion for analytics and a penchant for deep learning. Applications for the 2020 Pharis Fellowship program are now open and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Please visit here to apply.
